The
Woodcraft Folk's
International Camp in 2001
brought together 4000 young people including 700 international delegates
from over 30 countries.
During
the two-week camp which had sustainability
as its theme the young people set up groups who looked at food, energy,
waste, health and housing,
education, labour, peace & conflict, and culture. Activity centres
included workshops on alternative energy sources, peace, development
education. Cinema and music events were powered by solar and pedal power.
Two
Earth Summit meetings were held with representatives aged from 6 to
20 years. At the end of the fortnight a Declaration
was produced setting out actions to ensure a sustainable future.
This
Declaration was adopted by the whole camp and there was a strong desire
amongst the young people that it should be presented to world leaders
at the United Nations' World
Summit on Sustainable Development which was held in Johannesburg
this summer.After
much fundraising and planning
we managed to send
a group of young Woodcraft Folk members to the Summit.
The
resources - share your activities!
In
addition to reports from the summit, these pages contain educational
resources on each of the issues covered in the Declaration (links on
the left). They have been designed for use by Woodcraft Folk groups
but other youth groups and schools are also welcome to use them!
We
are hoping to create an even larger data base of ideas by inviting groups
to send in activities which they have devised or found elsewhere and
would like to share with others. To submit an activity click the link
below and fill in the details. Check back here regularly for new group
night ideas.
