Age group: Elfins/Pioneers

How long it will take: 1 hour +

What materials you will need: None - but if you have a video camera and TV it could be used

The aim of the activity: To explore the what advertising is trying to do to us and to think about the 'image' of the Woodcraft Folk

What to do:
At the end of your group meeting, ask members to spend some time during the coming week watching television adverts.

The following week discuss what they have seen. You may prefer to split into small groups for this discussion and then bring the conclusions back to the full group. In particular, raise the following questions in the discussion:

  • Which advert did they like best and why?
  • What do the advertisers want you to do?
  • Do you want to do it? Why?
  • Why do they put adverts on children's TV?
  • What problems can adverts cause?

After the discussion divide the group into small groups of three or four members. Ask each group to devise a television advert to promote the Woodcraft Folk.

Allow about 20 minutes for the groups to work out their adverts then bring the whole group back together. Watch each advert acted out in turn and, if you have a video camera, record them so that everyone can see how their own advert comes across on TV.
